She receives a separate check. She is still in school and will graduate next June from high school. Will my survivor benefits stop when she turns 18 or will it continue until she graduates?

Re: Social Security surviving spouse benefits end when child is 16

My husband died. I receive a check off his social security. My 17 and 5 year old does too. When my daughter turns 18 will we just loose that money or will it go to my youngest child ? Just because she's 18 doesn't mean she's moving out. We still have to pay bills. Please help me figure this out.

Re: Social Security surviving spouse benefits end when child is 16

how much is a minor allowed to save per month from their soc sec benefits

Re: Social Security surviving spouse benefits end when child is 16

It's a good question. My understanding of the auxiliary benefits is that it is a "pie" that gets sliced up depending on the number of people eligible. If a parent stops getting the aux benefits because the child turns 16, it certainly seems to me that the pie should be re-divided among the other eligible benefices, aka, the children. Check with SSA to see if this is how it will work in your case.

Re: Social Security surviving spouse benefits end when child is 16

Just wondering, when my child does turn 16, will the ampunt he receives stay the same or will HE receive the regular amount he gets now, PLUS the amount that I receive now, too?? Just curious bc if the amount we are entitled to is this certain amount (ours added together) would HE still be entitled to that whole amount?? His father worked from age 15 to the day he passed. Im just wondering because ive loomed it up and i cannot find this anywhere

Re: Social Security surviving spouse benefits end when child is 16

Don't forget to factor in that the surviving spouse can only make a paltry $15,000 a year to receive full mother/father benefits. Every $2,000 you make after that decreases the amount you can receive. My husband died in June and I found out the hard way that my pathetic $29,000 a year salary basically precludes me from collecting this "Mother's Benefit" until December of this year. Then the year resets and I wouldn't get another "benefit" until June of 2017, which is the month in which my son turns 16. No where on the SSI website does it tell you that there are income limits on it on the part of the spouse- Why work if they're going to penalize you for it? Funny me, I thought I was collecting on my husband's SSI for the work HE did, not mine. Just another government screwing like the joke of a death benefit that wouldn't even pay for a funeral bouquet.

Re: Social Security surviving spouse benefits end when child is 16

If a child and mother are receiving survivors benefits. The child ended up recently with another relative due to legal issues the child got involved in and the mother thereafter lost her living place and employment. The mother has been trying to stay involved but the family member kept taking away the child's phone to stop contact along with his web access. The mother stays involved in medical and legal decisions but the family member continually changes phone numbers. The mother sends down half of his money and holds the other for any other needs. The family member does not keep promises of keeping the child involved in activities. The mother said she would pay for but is constantly kept out of the loop. Can the mother just have his benefits discontinued because the child is not being kept in contact and is not with her? Even if she tries to fly back to get him, she knows they will try to prevent her getting him. She never has given custody over. The POA for school is about to expire in a month.

Re: Social Security surviving spouse benefits end when child is 16

I just want to say that I don't think it is fair that a child can only receive benefits from only one parent. Some of these congressional laws make me violently ill. I have an adult disabled
child whose dad is deceased and I am currently receiving ssb from my work record. My child
is receiving benefits from her dad's work record which is more than mine. I think she should be
entitled to both. We both worked and paid into the system and it took both of us to conceive
her. Their laws really suck sometimes.

Re: Social Security surviving spouse benefits end when child is 16

They will most likely receive benefits on the parent with the higher amount but not on both.

Re: Social Security surviving spouse benefits end when child is 16

Hi,

I am an attorney in California, and am having trouble finding an answer to this question: if both a child's parents die (let's say, simultaneously in a car crash), is the child entitled to receive survivor benefits from each parent (assuming each parent has enough credits and otherwise qualifies)?

We are doing an estate planning for our daughter. We have saving and life insurance, but I am curious to know if she would qualify for both my and my husband's benefits.

Thank you.
