I assumed i was receiving his pension it was not consistent and the amounts offten would change, this lasted for a period of three to four years and then just stopped. Was that normally what happens ? Because I'm not sure about what if anything should I do or look into the situation. Also is that what is called survivor benefits?

Re: When Social Security children’s deceased parent benefits stop?

A family friend told me that she knew a widow that had children receiving SS survivor benefits, and when they turned 18, they received a letter from SS that said they needed to refund any unused money left in the account under the children's names. Is this true? Can they do that? I am a recent widow of 2 small children. I work and do not use the money to support us at the moment and was hoping that it would help them go to college.

Re: When Social Security children’s deceased parent benefits stop?

My husband past away me and my daughter receives a social security death bennifits check but they are telling me that when my daughter turns 16 I lose my check is this true I mean the parent still has to take care of the child

Re: When Social Security children’s deceased parent benefits stop?

What if you marry some one else after you got a divorce but have a 7 year child together can she still get ssi and he just died

Re: When Social Security children’s deceased parent benefits stop?

My husband is disabled, his son gets SS benefit and turns 18 in August but doesn't graduate high school until the May after turning 18. Otherwise, benefits usually stop at age 18-19. This is noted in the article above.

For specific information about your daughter's eligibility to ongoing benefits, I encourage you to contact Social Security.

Re: When Social Security children’s deceased parent benefits stop?

my child recieves ssi and ssa. she is disabled herself but she started drawing her fathers disability when he passed away. she is now 18. but she will be graduating in june 2015 and turning 19 in august. she is planning to go to college as well. i was told as long as she is disabled, her benefits will continue. so Im trying to figure out if they will continue or will they stop when she graduates? remember , she is now drawing from her dads disabilty, but also recieves ssa

Re: When Social Security children’s deceased parent benefits stop?

I think you may be conflating the rights and requirements of children's SSI and survivor's benefits.

If these general information articles do not help, I encourage you to contact Social Security directly.
