North Star Foundation has partnered autism assistance dogs with children with autism since our incorporation as a nonprofit nearly a decade ago, and we now enjoy over 100 successful North Star placements around the country, including several terrific placements in Colorado.
Our philosophy of placement is a bit different from the others, as we breed and socialize our North Star dogs specifically for the children they will be partnered with and we include the children on the ground floor of training/communicating and caring for their assistance dog even as he/she is being trained.
You can see some North Star teams in action on our You Tube sight at www.youtube.com/profile?user=northstarvids and more information on our unique method of partnership can be found on our website at www.NorthStarDogs.com
I have written a book on this emerging field, THE GOLDEN BRIDGE: A Guide to Assistance Dogs for Children Challenged by Autism or Related Developmental Disabilities (Purdue University Press, July 2006) that can be ordered best price from Amazon.com (at http://www.amazon.com/Golden-Bridge-Development...) A companion DVD, Home Before Dark, is sent free of charge to any family or professional who works with a child with autism as education is an important part of our mission. (Just send me an e-mail at northstarfoundation@charter.net to receive this package.)
Please feel free to ask me any questions you might have...
Kind regards,
Patty
