It is a chronic auto immune disease of the small intestine. It affects the digestive system when food containing gluten is ingested, thus reduces the intestine's ability to absorb dietary nutrients. Celiac disease has some features of a true food allergy, however, this chronic digestive condition is triggered by eating gluten, a protein found in wheat and other grains. Please forgive me for my correction, however, there is a lot of un-intentional miss information out there about celiac disease.

Sincerely,

Mother of an 8 year old son with celiac disease diagnosed in January 2009.

Re: Celiac Disease and Social Security Disability

Hi,

I have Celiac Disease with other problems such as Mitral Valve Prolapse, Panic Disorder and depression. I am 54 years of age and don't feel that I can work any longer (I'm a software developer). I don't know how much a part the Celiac has played for the panic and depression. It seems to cause a host of symptoms. Any suggestions that you have to help me get on disability (I have disability insurance through my company) would be appreciated.

Thanks so much

Re: Celiac Disease and Social Security Disability

I am a parent of 5 children with celiac disease (and I myself have gluten side affects--memory issues, migraines, temporary blindness, and seizures). Four of the children have active disease (one child also has side-effects such as anemia, hypoglycemia, and depression; the other three suffer from painful stomach cramps/diarrhea, and memory/attention problems) and one has only the gene (though also demonstrates ADD/ADHD). In one month, our grocery bill ran over $1,000 JUST for gluten free products (not including the gluten free meats, dairy products, and fruits/vegies). We will be living off one income at the end of the month. Would we qualify for anything??

Re: Celiac Disease and Social Security Disability

Any medically recognized condition can be disabling. I have helped several people with celiac disease (adults and children) on disability claims.

Re: Celiac Disease and Social Security Disability

Can Celiac Disease be considered a disability from the government?

Re: Celiac Disease and Social Security Disability

Thanks for the mention Tomasz.
